QS Investors Innovator Series with Caltech     

The QS Investors Innovator Series with Caltech is a joint project that focuses on innovation, innovators and the disruption they are creating. The Series is a collaborative discussion bringing together our networks of people in different industries, business, arts, and academia to support the work that is being done in information, science, technology and engineering. It is a salon style presentation and discussion hosted by Janet Campagna (Chair, Board of QS Investors) & James Norman at QS Investors New York City office. Leading minds from various backgrounds are invited to join the discussion with these disruptive forces from Caltech's impressive multi-disciplinary environment.

Robotics & AI: Connecting the Body & Mind

Most of us envision Robotics & AI from science fiction movies and headlines. Although Robotics & AI have had many breakthroughs in recent years, robots by nature are what we design them to do. 

For robots to be truly autonomous they need dynamics, control and learning to adapt and succeed in an unstructured real world environment. With robotics you need to start with fundamental mathematics and 300 years of physics to teach robots how to walk.  From there they can bring back mobility to people who have never walked before, creating the possibility of a world without wheelchairs. This is one of the many ways autonomous systems and technology can make our lives better.

Headlines suggest that robots and AI are smarter than humans and soon will be better at everything. But in reality, the physical world is unstructured with uncertain environments and is exponentially complicated for robots and autonomous systems.  What would it take to get robots out of the lab and into the wild? What would have to happen for a robot to walk autonomously from Mexico to Canada or even on Mars? Imagine a world with no wheelchairs, translating what is learned from walking robots and locomotion to assistant technologies.

The Innovator Series is a collaborative salon style discussion bringing together our engaged network of people from varying industries who want to gain exposure to expertise from Caltech’s information, science, technology, and engineering disciplines. Attendees had the opportunity to ask forward looking questions around human motion for robotics, pathways towards regaining voluntary movement with spinal cord stimulation and exoskeletons, AI & human intervention, learning and adaptation, and the next big hurdles.


James Norman interviews Caltech Professor Aaron Ames covering topics around the societal impacts of Robotics and AI, shifting trends with automation and the workforce, the mathematical approach to solving complex problems, and how one singular motion, walking, can define a much broader class of problems. Solving complex problems often derives from uncovering fundamental simplicities.
